Golden Globes 2023: Hamnet takes the drama and Paul Thomas Anderson shines
The night was full of expectation, especially for a giant of Mexican cinema. Guillermo del Toro arrived with his ambitious version of ‘Frankenstein’, a personal bet that many viewed favorably. But cinema is like that, unpredictable. The grand prizes of the ceremony took another direction.
The big surprise, or perhaps not so much for those who follow the season, was the overwhelming victory of ‘Hamnet’ in the Best Drama Film category. A stroke of authority. And the man of the night, without a doubt, was Paul Thomas Anderson. The director was not satisfied with one; He took home the Golden Globes for Best Screenplay and Best Director for ‘One Battle After Another’, consolidating a great night for his project.
The director from Guadalajara left empty-handed, as the most important awards of the night went to him: “Hamnet”, in the Best Drama Film category, and Paul Thomas Anderson, for Best Screenplay and Best Director.
Mexico is at the door
It was not the only disappointment for Latin hopes. Diego Luna was also nominated, specifically for Best Actor in a television series-drama for his work in ‘Andor’, the Star Wars series that has received so much praise. However, the award finally went to the experienced Noah Wylie for ‘The Pitt’, a series that also won the award for Best Series, demonstrating its global strength.
The Golden Globe went to actor Noah Wylie, for “The Pitt”, a broadcast that also won Best Series.
Beyond these main focuses, the gala distributed recognitions that paint an interesting map of current cinema and television. In the international category, ‘The Secret Agent’ demonstrated its power winning the award for Best International Film. Animation had its clear queen: ‘The K-pop Warriors’ was crowned the Best Animated Film of the year. And on television, in addition to the success of ‘The Pitt’, there was room for the series ‘Adolescence’ to shine, adding another success to its record.
What does this edition leave us? A reaffirmation: Paul Thomas Anderson is in a sublime creative moment. ‘Hamnet’ consolidates its status as the season’s big favorite. And Hollywood is still a place where one day you win and the next you learn. For Del Toro and Luna, we will have to wait for the next battle. The film year has just begun its Oscar race and these Globes are just the first stop.
