A debut for history
At just 17 years old, Gilberto Mora became the youngest footballer to represent Mexico in a World Cup. The midfielder, known as “Gil”, debuted in the opening match of the tournament that Mexico co-organizes with Canada and the United States. El Tri beat South Africa 2-0 at the Azteca Stadium.
Mora entered at 65 minutes and the public chanted his name. His presence places him as the sixth youngest player to set foot on a World Cup field, only behind legends like Pelé, who debuted in 1958 five days younger than him.
“Once I had a dream, to be able to play with my team in a World Cup,” Mora wrote on Instagram when he was called up on May 31.
Coach Javier Aguirre praised him after the game:
“I have had several debuts, including Chicharito Hernández, Carlos Vela and Rafael Márquez. Gil is preparing; I think that, for his first time on a stage like this, it doesn’t look out of place.”
The rise of the youth
Son of former soccer player Gilberto Mora Olayo, he was born in Tuxtla Gutiérrez and trained in the Tijuana quarries. At the age of 15 he debuted in the Mexican first division. His career took off: he stood out at the U-20 World Cup in Chile 2025 and added minutes in the Gold Cup.
Hugo Sánchez compared his talent:
“He has tremendous self-confidence, quality, technique and he is already visualizing what he has to do.”
Mora enters the group of promising young players who made their debut as teenagers, like Messi with Argentina at 18 years old. The Mexican fans dream again of a new idol.
