A drastic change on the eve of the big tournament
The Ghana Federation made a decisive decision. He fired coach Otto Addo this Tuesday, with the World Cup clock ticking less than three months away. The African team faces a very tough group with England, Croatia and Panama.
The final straw was the 2-1 loss to Germany on Monday. It was the fourth consecutive setback in preparation games. The most painful, that 5-1 against Austria last week.
“The Ghana Football Association has decided to part ways with the head coach… with immediate effect,”
the federation announced in an official statement. The words are formal, but the message is clear: the results were not coming.
An uncertain outlook for the Black Stars
Ghana is left without a helmsman just weeks before the start. They are the second qualified African team to change coaches this month, after Morocco dropped Walid Regragui.
The most worrying thing is that there is no announced successor. The federation is silent on who will take the reins for the country’s fifth World Cup participation.
Addo had already led the team on an interim basis for much of 2022, including the World Cup in Qatar. Under his command, Ghana achieved an epic victory against South Korea, but lost to Portugal and Uruguay, leaving in the group stage.
Now, the challenge is monumental. Find a new leader who can reverse the negative dynamic and prepare the team in record time to face European powers. The window to correct course is closing quickly.
