Express ratification and without debate for the former prosecutor
By show of hands and with the opposition practically absent. This is how Morena and his allies in the Senate approved the ratification of Alejandro Gertz Manero as Mexican ambassador to the United Kingdom. President Claudia Sheinbaum’s proposal passed the legislative filter almost without friction.
The PAN and the PRI did not even participate in the discussion. Only Citizen Movement (MC) abstained, but its criticism was forceful.
“We do not want to normalize accelerated processes… if we allow appointments to occur in opacity and without the scrutiny they deserve, then we are opening the door to a dangerous precedent,” Senator Luis Donaldo Colosio (MC) warned from the rostrum.
His central argument: having an extensive career is not equivalent to having the necessary specialization for one of the most complex diplomatic positions in the world.
The official defense: meets the requirements
On the other side, deputy Magdalena Núñez Monreal (PT) came out to defend the former Attorney General of the Republic. His speech was the classic “comply with everything the law requires.”
“Citizen Alejandro meets all constitutional and legal requirements,” he stated, highlighting his knowledge of the State and his ability to dialogue “without subordinations.”
Morenoist senator Francisco Chiguil agreed with him, praising the “exhaustive evaluation” of his career. Curious, because that evaluation process is precisely what critics say was not seen in this accelerated procedure.
Here is the usual pattern: an appointment that comes from above, little or no legislative debate, and a justification based on legal technicalities while ignoring the substance. Does experience in public administration automatically equate to diplomatic suitability? The Senate, today, decided yes with a simple show of hands.
