A quarter of a century challenging the limits
Time, that implacable judge, has turned what was once scandalous into a mere whisper in the face of today’s din. Genitallica, that group whose lyrics made conservative radio stations tremble with songs like “Borracho” or “Zorra”, today laughs at the irony of fate: its provocations of yesteryear pale in comparison to the champagne reggaeton of the new era. What a cruel paradox! The same ones who were branded as irreverent are now almost “babies”, as Antulio Espinosa, their guitarist, confesses, with a mixture of sarcasm and nostalgia.
More Alcohol Please: A musical feast
The new album, baptized with the ironic title More Alcohol Please, is not only a celebration, but a sound manifesto. Fifteen songs that mix acid rock, nervating funk, unbridled mariachi and even a corrido tumbado that would make even the most conservative skeletons dance. “It’s our musical chili, mole and pozole,” declares Gallo, the vocalist, while his eyes shine with the spark of someone who knows he has created something unique. The lyrics, always sharp, cut like razors: some distill crude truth, others invite you to reflect, but they all carry the unmistakable stamp of a band that never gave in.
And although time has left its marks—tuitions and mortgages now compete with inspiration—the spirit remains intact. “We continue having fun like we did in 1998,” confesses Beno, the other vocalist, while they remember how the radio ban in Mexico and other countries only fueled their legend. The single “Por Tu Olor a Bacardí”, a cumbia that talks about drunken loves, is proof that they still know how to combine humor with contagious melodies.
The tour of the quarter century: Epic and sweat
The final touch will be a tour that promises to set three key cities on fire: El Lunario in CDMX, the C3 Stage in Guadalajara and the legendary Café Iguana in Monterrey. Scenarios that will witness how four rebels with a cause continue writing their story loudly and loudly. “The secret is not to take yourself seriously, but take the music seriously,” says Gallo, while the echo of his laughter mixes with the rumble of the amplifiers.
