The Mencho lists: open investigation, politicians out (for now)
Omar García Harfuch, the Secretary of Security, confirmed what everyone expected: the alleged payrolls of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) found in a cabin linked to ‘El Mencho’ are under scrutiny. But he made a clarification that will resonate in the corridors of power: so far, there are no politicians named in these investigations.
“We don’t have the case of politicians. We have local authorities and other sectors, but not politicians,” the official stated forcefully.
The statement was given during a conference in Sinaloa with President Claudia Sheinbaum. His message was clear: the ball is in the court of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR). They are the only ones who can validate these documents and decide whether to open formal cases.
And the bribes to police and National Guard?
When asked specifically about the alleged payments to state and federal security forces registered on the lists, García Harfuch did not deviate. He said that any indication will be investigated in accordance with the law. Not only in this case, but in any other.
The scenario he paints is this: there are active investigations against municipal and state police and other people linked to the cartel. But the great focus of attention – the names of political figures – is conspicuous by its absence… at least in what the authorities are willing to reveal publicly.
Meanwhile, EL UNIVERSAL had already uncovered the magnitude of the discovery: an improvised narconomina that recorded millions of pesos and dollars per month, a financial map of the criminal control of the CJNG in Jalisco. A document that, according to the newspaper, demonstrates the group’s tight control over illicit activities on a day-to-day basis.
That’s how things are. The government says it is following the trail of money and names. But for now, that trail does not lead – officially – to any politician. The question that remains is simple: is that the end of the story or just the first act?
