A ghost ship in French waters
The French navy does not mess around. On Friday, in the western Mediterranean, it intercepted and boarded the oil tanker Deyna. The suspicion: that it is part of that dark fleet that Russia uses to avoid international restrictions.
The most striking thing is the costume. Authorities confirmed that the ship was sailing under the false flag of Mozambique, despite having set sail directly from the Russian port of Murmansk. A crude, but common, attempt at camouflage.
A coordinated operation
This was not an isolated action. France moved to coordinate with allies, including the United Kingdom. While the British kept watch, the French came aboard to verify the ship’s nationality.
The documents found left no room for doubt: the flag was a hoax. Immediately, the Deyna was escorted to an anchoring point for further checks.

The discovery led authorities to act quickly. It underlines something that is sometimes forgotten in offices: maritime surveillance is key in this fight against the evasion of punitive measures. It is not enough to sign papers in Brussels or Washington.
Now, the case is in the hands of the Marseille prosecutor’s office. There they will decide what legal actions to take against the ship and its crew. It is the next step in a geopolitical game where the sea has become a chessboard.
