The dark side of the “perfect selfie”: another victim on the operating table
The Jalisco Prosecutor’s Office is busier than influencer during Fashion Week, because there are already four deaths due to aesthetic procedures in the state this year. The last victim, a woman whose only crime was trying to adjust her “wrap”, died in a hospital in the Colonia Mezquitán Country in Guadalajara. He arrived at 1:00 p.m. for his appointment with the scalpel and ended up with pulmonary arrest that cost him his life. Her husband received the most feared call: “Sir, come quickly”, the modern equivalent of “bring the crying camera” on reality TV.
Operating rooms that look like horror rooms (and not the fun kind)
The medical instruments are now locked away—as if it were the last iPhone on pre-sale—while the Specialized Blood Events Unit investigates. But the real drama here is that this is not an isolated case. In March, a woman died from an “adverse reaction” (translation: someone screwed up) to facial injections at Jardines Alcalde. In April, a trans woman lost her life in Tlaquepaque, where an “expert”—in giant quotes—injected polymers as if they were WhatsApp stickers. And in May, Jessica Rossman, an American lawyer, said goodbye forever at a Puerto Vallarta clinic that probably promised “celebrity results.”
The moral? That in Jalisco, the only safe “lifting” is that of death statistics. Meanwhile, clinics continue selling dreams on Instagram with Valencia filters and discounts for paying in cash. Because nothing says “medical confidence” like a “2×1 in lipos”.
