A love that began as a soap opera script (but without commercials)
If you thought that the dramas of Florinda Meza and Roberto Gómez Bolaños (aka Chespirito) only happened in front of the cameras, get ready for a plot twist worthy of Netflix. It turns out that their romance was more complicated than an episode of La Rosa de Guadalupe, with everything and a wife, six children and an attraction that took eight years to come to fruition. Blame? Zero, according to Florinda. And Chespirito’s ex-wife, Graciela Fernández, even marked him to tell him what she thought. Spoiler: it was not a message of love.
From “La Media Naranja” to the heart of Chespirito: a casting that changed everything
It all started in the 70s, when Florinda was an emerging actress (yes, before being the Doña of El Chavo) and Roberto was already a comedy genius… but married. In a vintage interview with EL UNIVERSAL, Meza dropped the bomb: “Wherever Don Roberto goes I will go, well if he takes me”. In other words, from there you could tell that chemistry was not just for the cameras. Of course, Chespirito, being a gentleman (or perhaps avoiding a scandal), decided to wait almost a decade before taking the step. Reason? He himself admitted it: “I didn’t want to be the typical one who changes a job for a bed.” Applause for honesty, Don Roberto.
But when they finally said yes, it was forever. Or almost, because death separated them in 2014. Chespirito not only gave Mexico eternal laughter, but also an epic declaration of love: “With Florinda everything was wonderful… I would have changed everything for her”. Even success, money and fame. How are you? Even Taylor Swift falls short with those verses.
The uncomfortable call and the “seven suitcases” of the past
Here comes the drama: Graciela, the ex-wife, called Florinda to tell her “my anger is with him, not with you”. And although at the time Meza took it as a “whatever”, years later he understood it: “It was a great package that got me off my back”. Imagine the scene: a call more intense than the end of Rebelde, but without an RBD soundtrack.
As if that were not enough, Florinda also had her own love affair with the director Enrique Segoviano (they almost got married, but in the end that script was shelved). Although, compared to Chespirito’s record —“six children, a wife and seven suitcases of pasts”— she came out ahead. Of course, when they talked about it, it was better to “stop talking.” Relatable, right?
In the end, their story was as iconic as the shows they created together. And although Florinda never felt guilty, she does have a lesson: love, like jokes, sometimes requires perfect timing.
