Incident with a Fatal Balance in the Jalisco Penitentiary Center
An explosion recorded during the early hours of this Friday at the facilities of the Comprehensive Regional Justice Center of Puerto Vallarta resulted in the death of two people deprived of their liberty. The Jalisciense Institute of Forensic Sciences is carrying out the corresponding expert reports and procedures to precisely establish the technical causes that led to this unfortunate event.
The catastrophic event occurred within the recycling workshop of the penitentiary establishment. At the time of the incident, the inmates assigned to the night shift were carrying out separation and classification tasks for plastic materials. The initial explosion immediately generated a rapidly spreading fire, severely complicating the situation inside the complex.
Emergency Response and Disaster Containment
Given the critical situation, the administrative and custodial staff of the penitentiary center immediately activated the established emergency protocols. The internal Civil Protection brigade began primary containment work while formal notification was made to the external competent authorities.
The operational response involved elements of Municipal Medical Services, as well as state and municipal units of Civil Protection and Firefighters. Upon arriving at the scene, the response teams found an area of approximately 160 square meters completely engulfed in flames, so they immediately began combat and extinguishing the fire. In parallel, the internal brigade concentrated its efforts on a secondary front to prevent the flames from reaching and consuming the carpentry of the prison, which would have represented a significant structural risk.
In the area of security and evacuation, the custody elements proceeded with the orderly evacuation of all inmates who were working in the directly affected area. During this process, it was found that two inmates had serious injuries, while two other individuals were initially reported missing. The injured were immediately transferred to receive medical attention within the same prison complex, where after a professional evaluation it was determined that their injuries did not warrant transfer to an external hospital center.
Tragic Result and Institutional Mobilization
Once the brigades managed to completely extinguish the fire, they proceeded with a thorough inspection of the damaged area. During this inspection, two of the inmates who were working in the workshop at the time of the explosion were found dead. In compliance with established protocols, the corresponding notification was made to the victims’ families about the fatal outcome.
The seriousness of the incident motivated a broad mobilization of security corporations at the state and federal level. Operational elements of the Secretary of Security of the State of Jalisco, the Secretary of National Defense, the Secretary of the Navy-Navy of Mexico and the National Guard were deployed around the perimeter of the prison, located in the Ixtapa delegation, with the objective of reinforcing security and guaranteeing order during subsequent investigations.
This unfortunate event highlights the risks inherent to industrial and manufacturing activities inside penitentiary centers, particularly those that involve combustible materials or processes with potential danger. The ongoing forensic investigation will be essential to determine the exact causal factors and establish the necessary preventive measures to avoid the recurrence of incidents of this nature.
