The US applauds Sheinbaum for not returning tariff blows

Unexpected praise from Washington highlights trade tensions with an ironic twist.

The art of not responding (or how to earn praise without lifting a finger)

In a twist worthy of a diplomatic soap opera, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick applauded Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum for… doing absolutely nothing? Yes, just as you read it. While Canada was getting creative with its tariff retaliations against the whims of Donald Trump, Mexico decided to adopt the “look at the landscape” strategy. And, surprise, it worked!

Praise for inaction: the new diplomatic standard

Lutnick, in a burst of sincerity (or perhaps boredom), suggested that Canada copy the Mexican roadmap: “Look how Mexico has handled it: moderation, pragmatism and… 75% approval!”. Because, of course, what better way to gain popularity than by avoiding a trade war? Revolutionary.

While Trump raised tariffs on China as if he were at an abstract art auction (“125% for the man in the red jacket!”), Mexico simply smiled and nodded. Master strategy or pure survival? The world doesn’t know it, but the US loved the show.

And just in case there was no drama, Lutnick dropped a pearl for Canada: “If they continue with their tariffs, we will talk in the Oval Office… and you know how he responds”. Translation: “Do you really want to wake up the dragon?”. With elections underway, Canada must now decide whether it prefers drama or quietism made in Mexico.

Moral? Sometimes, the best play is not to play. Or, as a politician would say: “Greatness is in the ability to not make waves… while others drown.”.

The shipment includes medicines, non-perishable food, electricity generating plants and other supplies. According to the president, 13.1 tons of medicines and 71.2 tons of additional supplies have been delivered.

Sheinbaum detailed:

“Two ships have already left for Venezuela that carry supplies of different types, both from collections that were made in our country, civil as well as from the government of the states that go there. They have medicines and non-perishable food and some other supplies.”

Rescue work

The Mexican military group “Yumare”, made up of 264 elements, has worked in the affected areas. So far, it has rescued two people and a dog alive, in addition to recovering the remains of 80 deceased people. There have also been 1,988 medical consultations and one surgical intervention.

At the National Palace, the president highlighted that the team was decorated by the president in charge of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, in recognition of their work in the rescue tasks.

Hamas gives up control in Gaza and advances international plan

Hamas dissolves emergency committee to allow new administration in Gaza.

Hamas ushers in new administration in Gaza

The Hamas government sent a signal to relax its control in the Gaza Strip. Ismail al-Thawabta, director of the press office, announced the dissolution of the local Emergency Committee. The measure seeks to facilitate the transition to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, a body provided for in the international plan.

The new entity will be under the supervision of the Peace Council. The job continuity of fifty thousand public employees is guaranteed.

Ali Shaath, president of the transition committee, assured that they are prepared to take control under a single law. However, the Islamist militia’s Ministry of the Interior will continue to manage security.

The Israeli government disqualified the initiative. He accused the organization of trying to replicate a model where they retain control of the armed forces.

Despite skepticism, the US administration is moving forward with the project through logistical and military support. A new round of negotiations will take place in Cairo in the coming days.

Venezuela reports 3,342 deaths after earthquakes

The authorities update figures from the earthquakes of June 24. The UN estimates thousands of missing.

New official balance sheet

The Government of Venezuela updated the number of victims of the two earthquakes that occurred on June 24. The new report, released on July 5, raised the total number of deaths to 3,342 and injuries to 16,740.

“Official balance as of July 5: 3,342 dead and 16,740 injured,” says the official note.

The previous figure, released a day earlier, recorded 2,954 deaths. The increase reflects the complexity of the rescue and identification of bodies in the affected areas.

Figures of missing people

Authorities have not provided an official number of missing people. However, the United Nations estimates that the number could reach 50,000, while other projections place it at around 10,000.

Given the magnitude of the tragedy, Venezuelan authorities buried more than 150 unidentified bodies in a long line of individual graves. The measure seeks to avoid health risks and provide a dignified burial to the victims.
