WhatsApp withdraws support for obsolete devices
Starting June 1, 2025, WhatsApp will stop working on a number of Android and iPhone devices that do not meet current technical requirements. This decision responds to the need to guarantee optimal security and performance on the platform, prioritizing operating systems with advanced capabilities.
Affected devices and technical reasons
According to the WhatsApp Help Center, the app now requires Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher, and iOS 15.1 or later. Excluded models include:
- Samsung: Galaxy S3/S4 series, Note 3 and older tablets
- Motorola: RAZR, Xoom and PHOTON models
- ZTE and Lenovo: Blade A450, Vibe Z2 and others with limited hardware
- iPhone: Models up to iPhone X (2017), including the first generation SE
The incompatibility arises because these devices cannot run the latest layers of encryption nor support functions such as HD video calls or cloud backups. Meta states that maintaining support for obsolete technology would compromise the integrity of the service.
Recommendations for users
To avoid interruptions in service, it is suggested:
- Check the operating system version in Settings > About device
- Exclusively download the app from Google Play Store or official App Store
- Enable two-step verification (available in Settings > Account)
Cybersecurity experts highlight that this measure reduces vulnerabilities in devices that no longer receive security patches from their manufacturers. According to a report by Kaspersky Lab, 63% of attacks on messaging applications exploit flaws in old versions of the software.
