Regulatory decision impacts air connectivity
The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a resolution that disallows the operation of thirteen new flights to the American Union. This regulatory measure directly affects the Mexico City (AICM) and Felipe Ángeles (AIFA) International Airports, representing a significant blow to the offer of air connectivity between both nations. The decision will have a considerable operational and financial impact, especially for AIFA, which faces the loss of more than five hundred flight operations per semester.
The Mexican airlines Aeroméxico, Volaris and VivaAerobus are affected by this provision, which cancels previously authorized permits. This action has generated an immediate reaction from the Mexican government. President Claudia Sheinbaum described the determination as a unilateral measure lacking justification, underlining the disagreement of national authorities with the US position.
Options and procedures for affected travelers
For passengers with tickets issued, the situation requires immediate attention. It is crucial to understand that the cancellation is due to an external government decision and not a cause directly attributable to the airlines. This nuance is fundamental, since it affects the application of the refund rights established in the Federal Consumer Law. Said legislation stipulates compensation of no less than 25% of the ticket price when the cancellation is the responsibility of the airline, a provision that does not necessarily apply in this exceptional context.
Each carrier has implemented its own protection policies for impacted customers:
Viva Aerobus has seen its new scheduled routes from AIFA to destinations such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Orlando, Austin, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Miami and New York cancelled. The company has asked its users to stay informed through its official channels, including its web portal and social networks, where specific procedures for ticket holders will be communicated.
Aeroméxico, for its part, has canceled the new service between AICM and San Juan de Puerto Rico. The airline has established two clear alternatives for its passengers. The first option is a full refund of the value of the ticket, either through an EMD (Electronic Miscellaneous Document) – a virtual wallet valid for one year for airline flights – or by returning the amount to the original payment method. The second alternative consists of a change of date or route without modification charges, subject only to fare differences. This policy applies to all affected reservations, regardless of their point of sale.
In the case of Volaris, the new route between AICM and Newark airport, New Jersey, has been canceled. Travelers are advised to contact the airline directly to learn about the options available to modify their itineraries.
In this complex scenario, the main recommendation for any affected passenger is to proactively contact your airline to find out the specific options for refunding or rescheduling your trip. Prompt communication will facilitate the resolution of each particular case.
