A friend says goodbye
Billy Crystal took the stage at the 2026 Oscars with a clear mission: say goodbye to his friend. Director Rob Reiner, who died last December, received a personal tribute full of anecdotes that made the Dolby Theater vibrate.
From accomplice to legendary filmmaker
Crystal remembered how she met him. It was in 1975, on the set of All in the Family. “He told me ‘we’re best friends, why don’t you humor me?'” the actor said. From that first meeting, he saw the transformation: from being a great actor to becoming a unique storyteller.
Their collaboration was long. It began with Reiner’s directorial debut in This Is Spinal Tap and continued with gems like When Harry Met Sally. While images were projected, Crystal reviewed a filmography that is the soundtrack of several generations.
“My friend Rob’s films will be eternal because they made us laugh, they made us cry, they inspired us to be better people.”
The tour included the successes that later conquered the Academy. Misery took Kathy Bates to the Oscar. A Few Good Men got a nomination for Best Picture. Every title he mentioned was another hit of nostalgia for the public.
But the tribute was not complete without mentioning Michele Singer, Reiner’s wife, who died the same day. Crystal highlighted her crucial role, not only as a life partner but as a collaborator in her projects and social activism.
“When Michele entered his life, they were inseparable… they filled the United States and the world with happiness.”
The ovation was closed with a simple and powerful phrase, addressed directly to his old friend: “Friend, how fun it was to meet you.” A perfect ending to a career that defined what it means to tell stories.
