When football gives you an epic script and the VAR turns it into a meme
There was Santiago Giménez, el “Bebote”, feeling like the protagonist of a Netflix movie just before the algorithm (that is, the VAR) decided that his moment of glory was not suitable for streaming. Allgiant Stadium, that behemoth that normally vibrates with NFL tackles, roared as if Taylor Swift had appeared in the VIP suite. But Guatemalan referee Mario Escobar, with his headset glued to his ear like an influencer in full live, had other plans. Spoiler: the happy ending was canceled.
Raúl Jiménez, who went from being the ghost on the bench to excited cheerleader, was already planning the epic tweet: “My student made history”. Until, surprise, technology said “nah, better not.” The goal, a circus shot that would have even made Guardiola cry with emotion, was disallowed for offside in the initial play. Because of course, in modern football, even the offside is measured with Swiss watch precision, even if your heart says otherwise.
The Tricolor stays with the “yes, but no”
Mexico tied 0-0 with Costa Rica, a result that, on paper, avoided the dreaded match against the United States in the quarterfinals (blessed standings). But come on, we all know that football is not played in Excel. Jaime Lozano’s team wanted to win, especially after Giménez’s goal gave them an adrenaline rush comparable to finding birria tacos at 3 AM. But the VAR, that spoilsport friend who always arrives when you don’t call him, reminded them that life is not fair.
The ironic thing is that the goal came from a free kick that was not even taken by Giménez, but that he alone finished off after a rebound. But the rule is clear: if the player was offside when the ball was initially kicked, it doesn’t matter if he later danced like Shakira in the Super Bowl. Goal disallowed, illusion destroyed, meme guaranteed.
Of course, the Tricolor continues to lead Group A, which means that in the quarterfinals they will face Saudi Arabia. A theoretically more manageable rival, although after this match, no one in Mexico dares to claim victory. Because if football has taught us anything, it is that even “easy” games can turn into an episode of Black Mirror.
Moral? Celebrate until the VAR speaks. And if you’re Santiago Giménez, maybe next time you’ll ask for a revised script before acting.
