A Celebration That Not Even Netflix Could Invent
Imagine this: a nonagenarian spiritual leader, a Hollywood actor with more karma than followers on Instagram, and a sacred mountain in the background. No, it’s not the script of a Wes Anderson movie, but the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday, celebrated this Sunday in Dharamshala, India. Thousands of Tibetan Buddhists (and some famous enlightenment seekers, *ahem* Richard Gere) gathered to honor the man who probably has more inner peace than all of us combined after a yoga session.
The Look of the Celebrated: Spiritual Fashion Fall 2024
The Dalai Lama, always at the forefront of monastic fashion, wore his classic robe with a yellow cloak that would make any #OOTD influencer pale. At 90 years old, he walked with elegance (and a little help from two monks, because no one is perfect) while the temples vibrated with chants and dancers moved their hips to the rhythm of cymbals and bagpipes. Yes, basically like a Coachella festival, but with more incense and less hangovers.
And then there is Richard Gere, the eternal devotee who has not missed these appointments since he discovered that Buddhism is cooler than the Oscars. He took the podium to deliver a speech that sounded like it had been written by a Disney screenwriter: “Day of joy to celebrate this extraordinary life.” He then planted a kiss on the Dalai Lama’s hand, because what better way to show admiration than a gesture that in any other context would be extremely rare?
Altruism, Smiles and a Little Bit of Chaos
Gere did not hesitate to define the Dalai Lama as the incarnation of altruism, which is true, although we could also add that he is the only nonagenarian who manages to get a crowd excited without the need for a viral TikTok. Between hugs, laughter and the sound of Tibetan bells (the spiritual equivalent of likes), the celebration was a reminder that, in a world obsessed with productivity, sometimes it is enough to smile and let others dance around you.
Moral? If you’re going to turn 90, do it surrounded by mountains, people who adore you, and a Pretty Woman actor as master of ceremonies. And if you can’t, at least share this note to pretend you were there. Spiritual #FOMO.
