When humor and family drama collide in Hollywood
Imagine this: two of the kings of comedy, those who made us laugh until we cried in the 90s (and who, let’s face it, still make us laugh in Netflix marathons), are now legally obliged to share family gatherings. Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence, the same ones who survived the excesses of Hollywood and questionable films (yes, Norbit, we’re looking at you), have just become in-laws. As? With a wedding so discreet that even the paparazzi missed the memo.
The express marriage that no one saw coming
It turns out that Eric Murphy (Eddie’s eldest son, the one who inherited the photogenic smile genes but avoided the Nutty Professor suits) and Jasmin Lawrence (Martin’s daughter, who clearly didn’t need a Martin security to steal hearts) decided that bombastic wedding plans are so 2010. A church? Yes. Guests? Nah. A preacher? Obviously, because even millennials need witnesses when they swear eternal love between memes.
Eddie, with that mixture of sarcasm and tenderness that only he masters, dropped the gossip on The Jennifer Hudson Show as if he were telling the end of a movie that we all missed: “They got married two weeks ago, without any fuss, as if they were normal.” Of course, because in their world, “normal” is dodging TMZ while signing million-dollar contracts. Of course, he let it slip that maybe—just maybe—there will be an epic party afterwards, because what is a legal union without an open bar to justify the expenses?
The irony here is that these two actors, experts at chaotic scenes (did someone say ‘Bad Boys’?), will now have to deal with the real drama: deciding which side of the family hosts Thanksgiving. Are we betting they’ll end up in a stand-up duel to see who gets the turkey?
Meanwhile, the rest of the planet is still wondering: how often will these two laugh at family dinners? Who will do a better imitation of the other? And, most importantly, when will they invite us to the engagement party… I mean, “in-laws”?
