Impact on business
Merchants from the Historic Center of Mexico City demanded the immediate removal of the sit-in installed by the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE). They point out that the blockades have generated severe economic damage.
“The establishments are not in a position to wait until June 10 for the protest to end,” said Gerardo López Becerra, president of ConComercio Pequeno.
He explained that businesses require average daily income of 15 thousand pesos to cover their operating expenses.
Million dollar losses
During a press conference, the leader explained that sales in the affected perimeter fell between 90 and 100 percent. Nearby businesses report decreases close to 60 percent.
López Becerra asked the capital authorities to set up an effective dialogue table with the members of the CNTE. He clarified that merchants are not seeking confrontation, but rather agreements to recover mobility and economic activity.
