A night to forget
Ousmane Dembélé, the new winner of the Ballon d’Or, did not find his best version in the Parc des Princes. The Frenchman missed an early penalty and wasted another clear chance, as PSG drew 1-1 with Newcastle.
That result left both teams out of the top eight of the group stage. There is no direct pass to the second round. Now it’s time to risk your life in the playoffs.
The moment that changed everything
The penalty came almost at the beginning. Bradley Barcola advanced from the wing and the ball touched first his arm and then that of Lewis Miley. Referee Slavko Vincic, after reviewing the video, pointed out the fateful point.
Dembélé aimed for the bottom right corner, but Nick Pope made a brilliant save.
The English goalkeeper was a momentary hero. But after eight minutes, Vitinha did overcome their resistance with a beautiful curved shot from outside the area.
The night took a turn for the worse for Dembélé near halftime. With the entire goal in front of him, after a measured cross, he raised the ball over the crossbar from ten meters. A failure that hurts.
Joe Willock equalized for Newcastle in first-half stoppage time. And Harvey Barnes, already in the final minutes, had the opportunity to give the English the victory… but it didn’t materialize either.
In the end, a point that means little for a PSG that had its recently awarded star. Sometimes even the best have gray days. The Champions League does not forgive.
