A goodbye that hurts like forgetting your child at home
The news hit us all like a splash of cold water. Catherine O’Hara, that actress who made us laugh in ‘Schitt’s Creek’ and was the most distracted (but adorable) mother in cinema, died at the age of 71.
But there is a farewell that is going around the world and has us millennials with a lump in our throats.
Macaulay Culkin has just published a tribute that is pure liquid nostalgia.
“Mom, I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I listened to you. But I had so much more to say. I love you. See you later.”
That’s what the original Kevin McCallister wrote alongside photos of the two of them, separated by decades. The before and after of a relationship that began on screen but clearly transcended fiction.
The connection that survived Christmas stress
Let’s remember: in 2023, during Culkin’s star ceremony on the Walk of Fame, O’Hara cried when calling him “the most beloved thing.” He thanked her for having been his mother in films where, ironically, she left him abandoned not once, but twice.
“Thank you for including me, your fake mother who left you alone at home not once, but twice, to share this happy occasion.”
That dynamic – the inside joke about their characters – shows how special their bond was. It wasn’t just colleagues greeting each other at events. It was a real film family.
O’Hara had this incredible career: from ‘Beetlejuice’ to the massive success of ‘Schitt’s Creek.’ But for our generation, she will always be Kevin’s mother. The one who organized that perfect family chaos before leaving for Paris.
Now Culkin is left without his movie ‘mom’. And we are left without pieces of our childhood. Time passes, legends go, but the movies… those remain forever.
PS: If today you feel like watching ‘Home Alone’, no one is going to judge you. I already have the DVD ready.
