The magic formula? A school for bosses
Omar García Harfuch, the man in charge of Citizen Security and Protection (SSPC), announced today the launch of the School for Commands. The setting: President Claudia Sheinbaum’s morning conference. The message: for the first time, all those in charge of security will be trained under the same roof.
“The next Secretaries of Public Security, Undersecretaries and commanders will be trained here,” explained García Harfuch.
The idea is simple, or at least that’s what they sell. Bring together in one place the future leaders of the Army, Navy, National Guard, SSPC and even the National Intelligence Center. Let them learn the same. Let them speak the same language. Sounds good on paper, right?
Approval… after how many six-year terms?
The security minister elaborated: the objective is to “standardize, for the first time, the training” of all institutions. The key word is “for the first time”. One wonders what we have been doing all these years if until now it has occurred to us that bosses should be trained under common standards.
They promise an approach with “adherence to human rights, honesty and a cause-focused approach.” They are the words that every official speech on security must have. The test, as always, will not be in the classroom but in the street.
García Harfuch closed with the expected rhetoric: commands with “honesty, loyalty, discipline and… deep conviction of service.” A new course does not change institutional cultures rooted for decades. But it’s a first step. Or at least, that’s what we have to believe today.
The school will also open spaces for police officers or state prosecutors who want to participate. The final message is clear: they seek to create a new generation of managers. Time will tell if this diploma is useful for more than just hanging on the wall.
