Expansion of consular services for the Mexican community
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported a 21% increase in appointments granted by the Mexican consular network in the United States during April 2025, compared to the same period of the previous year. This growth is part of a comprehensive strategy to optimize attention to the Mexican diaspora, which includes the digitalization of processes and the expansion of operational capabilities.
Civil registry and immigration advice lead the demand
Civil registration procedures experienced an increase of 179%, standing out as the service with the greatest growth. At the same time, 6,800 legal advice has been provided, with a predominant focus on immigration matters (75% of the total). These data reflect the urgent needs for documentary regularization and legal guidance among compatriots.
The Foreign Ministry implemented the “Open Door Consulates” program, which combines in-person services with proactive community outreach initiatives. This model makes it possible to identify cases of vulnerability, prevent risks and expedite the issuance of key documents such as birth certificates or nationality certificates.
Consular protection and humanitarian assistance
The Information and Assistance Center for Mexican People (CIAM) registered a 65% increase in telephone calls during 2025, exceeding 69,000 interventions. This service operates 24 hours a day and serves as the first line of response for emergencies, cases of detention or requirements for consular protection.
Among the innovations implemented, the following stand out:
- Digital platforms for requesting appointments with reduced response times
- Mobile units that provide services to rural or hard-to-reach areas
- Specialized training in immigration law for consular staff
Context and projections
This institutional effort responds to the historic increase in the Mexican population in the United States, which exceeds 37 million according to the Pew Research Center. Experts in immigration policy point out that consular efficiency directly impacts the socioeconomic inclusion of migrants, particularly in states with restrictive legislation.
The data reveal a correlation between the expansion of services and the reduction of critical cases: in 2024, 23% of assistance corresponded to emergencies, while in 2025 this percentage dropped to 17%, suggesting that preventive strategies are generating tangible results.
