Conapred condemns prejudiced messages from Javier Hernández
The National Council to Prevent Discrimination (Conapred) issued a statement in response to the statements of soccer player Javier Hernández, known as “Chicharito”, who perpetuated gender stereotypes on his social networks. The organization urged to promote inclusive language and eradicate messages that minimize the fight for women’s rights. “These narratives violate human dignity and limit the full exercise of rights,” he noted.
Controversial statements and institutional reactions
Among the striker’s statements, phrases such as: “You want a male provider, but for you cleaning is patriarchal oppression” stand out, as well as criticism of feminist movements for “eradicating masculinity”. The Women’s Secretariat, led by Citlalli Hernández Mora, described these speeches as sexist and misogynistic, emphasizing that women have the right to develop outside of traditional roles.
President Claudia Sheinbaum also spoke during her morning conference: “It is a very sexist idea. Women can be whatever they want,” she stated, although she recognized the player’s sporting career.
Positioning of the Guadalajara Club
Club Deportivo Guadalajara, the team to which Hernández belongs, announced that “it has taken corresponding actions” according to its internal regulations, without detailing specific measures. He reiterated his commitment to gender equity and the rejection of behaviors that reinforce inequalities.
Analysis: Social impact and public responsibility
This episode revives the debate about the influence of public figures in the normalization of stereotypes. Communication experts point out that statements like these, coming from athletes with a wide reach, can reverse progress in equality. Civil organizations ask that the controversy be taken advantage of to promote educational campaigns.
Data from INEGI reveal that 72% of Mexican women have faced discrimination based on gender, which underlines the urgency of addressing these issues from media and sports spaces.
