Changes to judicial reform are endorsed
The Constitutional Points Commission of the Chamber of Deputies approved two key opinions. The first proposes postponing the second judicial election until 2028. The second incorporates foreign intervention as a cause for annulment of elections.
The first ruling obtained 29 votes in favor of Morena, PVEM and PT, and 11 against PAN, PRI and Movimiento Ciudadano. The opposition indicated that the postponement could cost between 10 thousand and 15 billion pesos. Resources that, they stated, could be allocated to health, education and infrastructure. They also questioned the impact on the independence of the Judiciary.
Official deputies defended the measure. They argued that it seeks to avoid the concurrence of electoral processes and strengthen the judicial career. The opposition insisted that deeper structural reform is required.
The second opinion was approved with 28 votes in favor, nine against and two abstentions. The opposition warned that the measure could be used discretionally. They pointed out that it leaves out the influence of criminal organizations on the integrity of the electoral processes.
Both opinions advance towards the plenary session. An intense debate is expected on its budgetary and political implications.
