The champion who does not give up even when the body says enough
Coco Gauff did it again. The world number three advanced to the fourth round of the Madrid Open, but it was no walk in the park. It was an epic battle against herself.
The American vomited on the court during the second set. Yes, you read that right. While fighting Sorana Cirstea, his stomach said “this far.” But she doesn’t.
“When I vomited on the court, it was a little embarrassing. Then I felt like it left me weak,” Gauff confessed.
But this is not just tennis, it is a life lesson. Gauff lost the first set 4-6 and it seemed like everything was going to ruin. But then the incredible thing happened.
With three breaks down, with nausea and extreme exhaustion, he came back to win the second set 7-5. And then he closed with authority: 6-1 in the third.
“I’m someone who doesn’t like to retire. I don’t like to do it unless I feel like I have no other option,” he said between points.
And that is exactly what makes sport great: will over body. Like when you’re in the last mile of a race and your legs are screaming, but your mind says “one more step.”
Now she will face Linda Noskova, the 13th seed. But after this display of grit, who can doubt Gauff?
Tennis is a school of life, and today Coco gave us a master class.
