The red and white shirt that conquered the desert
Ok, this is one of those moments that makes you smile and think ‘of course, it had to happen’. Las Chivas, that team of which we all have a fanatic relative, has just appeared in one of the global temples of music. And not anywhere.
It was during the historic set of Karol G, the first Latina to headline Coachella. In the middle of the show, one of their dancers came out on stage with…guess? The starting shirt of the Sacred Flock.
The moment went viral on social networks, where users highlighted the reach of the Guadalajara team as a social phenomenon that transcends the sports field.
The reaction was instantaneous. You can imagine the thousands of Mexicans in the crowd screaming as if it were a goal in Akron. But this goes beyond football.
Mexico takes Coachella (in the best way)
The most interesting thing is that it was not the only thing. The show was an ode to Jalisco and Mexico. There were also references to the Leones Negros and a mariachi made up exclusively of women that put the chinita skin on half of California.
It’s curious: while some continue to debate whether football is culture, the Chivas jersey is already dancing at Coachella. Without asking permission. That says more about our place in the world than any speech.
In the end, what went viral was not just a t-shirt. It was confirmation that our passions travel without a passport and appear where you least expect them. And that, friends, is soft power made into a meme.
