More than a decade after his death, Roberto Gómez Bolaños returned to the ears of Mexico. The Mexican National Team used a digital recreation of his voice to present the 26 footballers summoned by Javier Aguirre for the 2026 World Cup.
The video, spread on the social networks of the Mexican Soccer Federation, caused a wave of nostalgia. “They revived Chespirito”, “I did shed a tear” or “What a thrill to hear the story” were some of the comments that thousands of fans left.
The family’s reaction
Roberto Gómez Fernández, son of the comedian, thanked the gesture with a statement. “I am deeply honored to have been invited to participate in the unveiling of the 26-player roster… through a digital recreation of my father’s voice,” he wrote.
“Soccer was one of my father’s great passions throughout his life. His love for this sport was reflected in one of his most endearing works: El Chanfle,” he added.
Fernández assured that, had he been alive, Chespirito would have accepted with pride and emotion to be part of this announcement.
A love that transcended the screen
Roberto Gómez Bolaños dreamed of being a professional soccer player when he was young. He poured that passion into his characters: in El Chavo del 8 the name of Enrique Borja, scorer for América in the seventies, was recurring.
In 1979 he released El Chanfle, a film in which he played a Club América prop man. The success led to a sequel in 1982. His love of football accompanied him all his life, and today his voice once again unites generations in a World Cup context.
