Return of naval cadets after collision on the Brooklyn Bridge
The Secretary of the Navy (SEMAR) confirmed the arrival to Mexico of 172 cadets and two officers from the Heroic Naval Military School, who were on board the training ship Cuauhtémoc during the accident that occurred in New York. The sailboat, emblematic of the Mexican Navy, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge last week, an incident that unfortunately claimed the lives of two young people.
Details of the operation and situation of those affected
According to the official statement, the cadets arrived at the port of Veracruz in the early hours of Monday, along with a captain, an officer and three crew members. The institution highlighted the collaboration of the Secretariat of Foreign Relations (SRE) and Aeroméxico to facilitate the transfer. Two cadets remain in US hospitals under medical observation, although their clinical condition was reported as stable by naval authorities.
The ship Cuauhtémoc, built in 1982, is a symbol of international naval training and has participated in numerous training voyages. The accident has generated coordinated investigations between Mexican and US authorities to determine the technical causes of the impact, which include analysis of meteorological conditions, navigation failures and safety protocols.
Institutional impact and next steps
This event marks one of the most tragic episodes in the recent history of the Mexican Navy. Navigation experts point out that the Brooklyn Bridge area presents logistical challenges due to its high density of maritime traffic. SEMAR announced that it will provide psychological support to the affected cadets and review training protocols in complex waters.
Meanwhile, the naval community has paid tribute to the deceased through ceremonies on both sides of the Atlantic. Relatives of the victims will receive full pensions and educational scholarships, as established in military regulations.
