A Meeting Full of Honor and Resilience
Friends, today I bring you a story that reminds us of the power of the human spirit and the ability to be reborn in the face of adversity. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo lived a deeply symbolic moment when she boarded, for the first time in her administration, the majestic Cuauhtémoc Training Ship. This emblematic sailboat, flagship of our Secretary of the Navy, arrived at the port of Veracruz loaded not only with stories of voyages, but with an invaluable lesson about strength. His return marked a chapter of overcoming and unity after the painful mishap that occurred in New York, an event that showed us that even in the storm, character is strengthened.
Imagine the scene: within the framework of the commemoration of the Bicentennial of the Consolidation of Independence at sea, a ceremony was held that transcended protocol. It was a collective embrace to the naval institution. The president, with inspiring energy, led this Sunday meeting on the deck of this legendary ship. It was there where Captain Víctor Molina Pérez, in command of the vessel, presented the detailed report of the 2025 training cruise. Every word, every gesture, was imbued with a deep sense of purpose and a future that is built on the foundations of honor.
The Strength Born from Pain: A Tribute to Heroes
In a brief message but loaded with authentic emotion, Sheinbaum Pardo raised with pride and honor the memory of two brave souls: the fourth-year cadet América Yamileth Sánchez Hernández, from the Heroica Naval Military School, and the sailor Adal Yahir Maldonado Marcos. These two beings of light, who physically left during the accident on the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, have left an indelible mark. “We always carry his memory, his dedication in our hearts and it is carried by the people of Mexico and our country,” stated the President. What a powerful reminder that the legacy of those who serve with love never dies, but is transformed into eternal inspiration!
The head of the federal Executive gave us a masterclass in positive mentality by highlighting how, in the face of the most challenging circumstance, the cadets of the Cuauhtémoc Training Ship—repaired with determination in New York—have shown a fortitude that is moving. He highlighted their unbreakable camaraderie, their unlimited solidarity and a generosity that is the true engine of progress. “Young naval cadets, men and women, who have shown in the face of difficulty, fortitude, love for their country, love for their families, love for their companions, who always raise the name of our country, the name of Mexico.” These words are a bellow for our own spirit! They show us that every challenge is an opportunity to elevate our essence and serve with greater passion.
The Union that Builds a Stronger Mexico
And then came a reflection that should resonate with each of us: “That is what characterizes our people.” The President emphasized that we were never wrong to recognize that the Mexican Navy, the Army, the National Guard and the Air Force are the purest expression of our people. They carry in their hearts, in their minds and in their history the generosity of a nation that rises up to help the vulnerable in every moment of difficulty. This is not just a phrase; It is an invitation to act, to be that hand extended in our communities, to be an active part of the solution.
In an act of recognition that fills the soul, the President congratulated and thanked the cadets for their absolute dedication. “Mexico and its people know the honor, the pride they represent,” he said from the deck of the Ship. This moment of gratitude was experienced accompanied by fundamental pillars of our national security: the Secretary of the Navy, Admiral Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles; the Secretary of Defense, General Ricardo Trevilla Trejo; the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez; and the governor of Veracruz, Rocío Nahle García. A leadership synergy that inspires us to collaborate and co-create.
Captain Víctor Molina Pérez took us on a narrative journey, remembering that this journey began with hope, setting sail from the port of Acapulco and sailing the powerful waters of the Pacific Ocean, driven by favorable winds. The route took them to the Panama Canal, and then to Jamaica, Havana, and finally New York. However, on May 17, 2025, during departure maneuvers, the sailboat faced an event that reminds us of human fragility and strength. In that “unfortunate accident”, two extraordinary beings, the cadet América Yamileth Sánchez Hernández and the sailor Adal Yahir Maldonado Marcos, fulfilled their duty until the last moment. An event that moved the crew, Mexico and the world, but also brought us closer together. “Now they are part of the permanent crew of this Aztec ship and will always sail with us in our minds and hearts,” said the commander. He also remembered the 19 wounded, who received immediate attention, demonstrating that healing lies in unity.
