Analysis of the tragic accident in Atlacomulco
The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico (FGJEM) has provided fundamental technical details derived from the investigation of the accident that occurred on the Atlacomulco-El Oro highway. According to the first investigations and testimonies collected, the operator of the Herradura de Plata line bus, identified as Gustavo Alfredo “N”, would have kept the vehicle’s audio volume at excessively high levels. This circumstance, considered a serious distraction factor, could have been a determining causal element by preventing the driver from perceiving the acoustic warning signals, specifically the locomotive horn, emitted to prevent the collision.
Impact dynamics and immediate consequences
The reconstruction of the events indicates that the public transport unit, with 72 passengers on board, was stopped in the vicinity of the railway crossing located in the Las Mercedes neighborhood. Upon resuming travel, the driver proceeded to unexpectedly invade the crossing, placing himself directly in the path of the train. The impact was inevitable and extremely violent, resulting in a preliminary balance of 10 deaths (seven women and three men) and 62 people injured (36 females and 26 males). The response of the emergency services was immediate, with the transfer of 55 injured people to various hospital centers and hospitals in the region for the administration of the urgent medical care they required. Until the last report, 42 of these people have been discharged, while 10 remain in delicate condition and another three are stable but under medical observation.
The severity of the mishap activated all security and justice protocols. The driver, Gustavo Alfredo “N”, initially fled, which complicated the early stages of the investigation. However, he was located and apprehended last Sunday in the Villas del Paraíso subdivision, in the state of Michoacán. The authorities proceeded to capture him based on an arrest warrant linked to the crimes of manslaughter and qualified injuries. Subsequently, he was formally admitted to the El Oro Penitentiary and Social Rehabilitation Center, where he was placed at the disposal of a judge to face the corresponding legal process.
This unfortunate event reopens the debate on safety protocols at railway crossings, mandatory training for heavy transport operators and measures to avoid distractions behind the wheel. The implementation of early warning technology at these crossings, as well as strict supervision of transport companies, are emerging as critical aspects to review to prevent the repetition of events with such serious consequences. The FGJEM continues with the investigations to determine if there were other concurrent factors that contributed to this tragedy.
