Analysis of a tragic event in the State of Mexico
A traffic accident of catastrophic magnitude was recorded in the municipality of Atlacomulco, State of Mexico, resulting in the loss of ten human lives and a balance of fifty-five people injured. The accident, which occurred at a railway crossing, involved a public transportation unit from the Herradura de Plata line and a freight locomotive from the company Canadian Pacific Kansas City Southern de México.
Impact dynamics and emergency response
The bus, with identification plates 675HY9, had started its route in the Municipality of San Felipe del Progreso bound for Mexico City. At approximately 7:00 a.m., while traveling on the Atlacomulco-El Oro highway, the driver tried to overtake locomotive 4727 at the intersection with Bulevar Arturo Montiel Rojas, located in the industrial zone. The maneuver resulted in a head-on collision with devastating consequences. The force of the impact split the two-story unit in half and completely detached the roof structure.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and despair immediately after the crash. Numerous passengers were thrown out of the vehicle due to the violence of the impact, while others tried to get out of the deformed remains of the bodywork by their own means. A testimony collected at the scene describes the severity of the injuries: “We had to see how they took out people without arms or legs, one even had his head open.”
The response of the emergency authorities was immediate and massive. A joint operation was deployed that integrated more than one hundred Civil Protection elements and fire departments from the municipalities of Atlacomulco, El Oro, San Felipe del Progreso, Jocotitlán, Acambay and Ixtlahuaca. The operation had the support of the State Police, the National Guard, the Mexican Army and personnel from the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico.
Final balance and institutional reactions
Emergency medical services confirmed the death of seven women and three men at the scene. The total of fifty-five injured was distributed among several medical institutions in the region: eleven transferred to Clinic 252 of the IMSS; twenty to the General Hospital of Atlacomulco; ten to the General Hospital of San Felipe del Progreso; eleven to the Santa María Clinic; one to the Juan Pablo Segundo Clinic; one to CEMI Ixtlahuaca and one more to the GEA Clinic.
An element that complicates the investigation is that the driver of the public transport unit fled after the accident, evading his initial responsibility. However, Odilón López Nava, delegate of the National Chamber of Passenger and Tourism Transportation in the entity, assured that the company Herradura de Plata assumed legal and operational responsibility for the accident, committing to follow up on the medical care of the injured and support for the families of the fatal victims.
For its part, the Canadian Pacific Kansas City of Mexico railway company (CPKC of Mexico) issued an official statement expressing its condolences for the fatalities and ensuring that it will provide all the necessary information for the corresponding experts to determine the exact causes and legal responsibility for the tragic event.
This unfortunate event once again puts on the table the discussion about road safety at railway crossings nationwide, the need to reinforce preventive measures and the importance of respecting warning signs to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
