Blanca Lucía Prado assumes direction of the UNAM Institute of Geology

New director of the IGL prioritizes research on climate change and water resources.

Researcher Blanca Lucía Prado Pano took office as director of the Institute of Geology (IGL) of the UNAM for the period 2026-2030. Its agenda focuses on strengthening research on climate change, energy transition, water resources, soil conservation and comprehensive risk management.

Work plan and priorities

Prado Pano highlighted that Earth sciences are strategic for the country’s main environmental challenges. He pointed out that Mexico has exceptional geological wealth, which makes it a natural laboratory for frontier research.

During the presentation of his plan, he indicated that his administration will review the lines of research of each department and promote interdisciplinary projects that integrate scientific, social and environmental knowledge.

One of the axes will be to consolidate the training of specialized human resources, expand scientific research and reinforce the dissemination of knowledge. It will also seek to strengthen collaboration with other university institutes, such as Geography, Geophysics, Geosciences and the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate Change.

The new direction of the IGL seeks to comprehensively address the country’s environmental challenges, with emphasis on solutions based on geological research.

Disturbios en Huaquechula

Tres patrullas fueron incendiadas por habitantes del municipio de Huaquechula, en el centro-occidente de Puebla, luego de que estos detuvieran a un presunto asaltante de tráileres. La noche del jueves, pobladores encontraron un tractocamión desvalijado con reporte de robo.

El grupo se organizó, capturó a un sospechoso y lo entregó a las autoridades. Sin embargo, la tensión escaló y los manifestantes quemaron las patrullas. Ante la violencia, los tres niveles de gobierno activaron protocolos de seguridad.

Horas después, la Secretaría de Seguridad Pública (SSP) informó que la situación fue controlada. En un comunicado, aseguró que “la situación se encuentra en calma” y reportó solo daños materiales.

Contexto de violencia en Puebla

La entidad enfrenta una escalada de hechos violentos. Según medios locales, en la región se han registrado al menos cinco fallecidos en los últimos días. Durante el primer semestre del año, la organización Causa en Común documentó 130 casos de violencia extrema en Puebla.

Estos incluyen homicidios con tortura, crímenes contra mujeres con extrema crueldad, actos violentos contra la autoridad, tragedias múltiples y mutilaciones. Con esas cifras, Puebla se ubicó en el séptimo lugar nacional por actos de violencia grave.

Morelos registers historic low in homicides in June

Marcela Figueroa, head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, reported a 54% drop in the daily average of intentional homicides in Morelos between September 2024 and June 2026.

During President Claudia Sheinbaum’s morning conference in Cuernavaca, Figueroa attributed the results to the Morelos Plan, with emphasis on inter-institutional coordination, intelligence and research.

The average went from 3.5 homicides a day to 1.6. “The even more pronounced decline is particularly noteworthy (…). To date, it is the lowest June since 2019; that is, of the last 8 years if we compare it even with last year, June 2026 presents a reduction of 43%,” he noted.

It also reported a 9% drop in the daily average of high-impact crimes. The national public security strategy maintains its application in the entity.

President Claudia Sheinbaum affirmed that sugar cane producers in Morelos have received support from the federal government. During his morning conference in Cuernavaca, he highlighted the increase in the sugar export quota to the United States, which went from 250 thousand to one million tons.

“Practically all sugarcane growers had access to the Production for Wellbeing program and received other support,” said the president.

Sheinbaum indicated that this measure will give greater certainty to the price of cane and sugar in the market.

Agenda in Morelos and state support

After the conference, the president held a meeting with sugarcane producers and inaugurated a housing project in Jojutla. Then he will continue his tour in Guerrero.

Governor Margarita González Saravia welcomed Sheinbaum and recognized the coordination with the federation. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to promoting development, including agricultural strengthening.

The federal government thus maintains its support for the sugarcane sector, combining social programs with access to international markets.
