Section 22 of the SNTE reported that 15 teachers were injured on Wednesday in San Pablo Villa de Mitla, Oaxaca. The incident occurred during a road blockade that was maintained on the access road to the municipality. According to the teachers, the attack was perpetrated by residents who appeared together with municipal authorities.
Incident details
Eleven of the teachers were treated at the ISSSTE Presidente Juárez Regional Hospital. A teacher will be transferred to Mexico City due to probable glass ingestion. The remaining four received care in different hospital centers in the region. Damage to at least 13 vehicles was also reported, a figure that could increase.
The union blamed the municipal president of San Pablo Villa de Mitla, Esaú López, for the events. He pointed out that the attackers had arrived with large-caliber weapons. López requested indefinite leave after the events. Section 22 denied that the teachers initiated the confrontation.
In their position, the teachers assured that it was not a confrontation, but a direct attack against their peaceful mobilization. They rejected the versions that point to them as responsible for the violence and stated that they were attacked without carrying weapons. The leadership also blamed the state and federal government for what happened and demanded the dismissal of the mayor, as well as criminal sanctions.
Section 22 called to reinforce its day of struggle. They maintain mobilizations and protest actions, including the seizure of facilities of the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Oaxaca.
