Arthur Fery’s feat at Wimbledon
Arthur Fery, world number 114, is a Wimbledon semi-finalist. The 23-year-old Briton needed an invitation to enter the tournament. This Wednesday he defeated ninth seed Flavio Cobolli 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-0 on Center Court.
The victory came in front of roaring fans and the presence of Queen Camilla. Fery grew up five minutes from the All England Club. His streak has been dubbed a “Ferytale.”
“He gets better and better every game,” Fery said on the court. “I just can’t believe it.”
The only other wild card to reach the men’s semi-finals at Wimbledon was Goran Ivanisevic, when he won the title in 2001.
Fery sealed his victory with an ace and fell on his back to celebrate. “In that last game, I felt emotions that I had never experienced before in my life,” he said.
Meeting with royalty
Minutes before the game, Fery and Cobolli met Queen Camila in the hallway. “She came to say hi. It’s obviously an honor to play in front of her. She said kind words to me at the end,” Fery said.
Princess Kate congratulated him on social media for his “fantastic achievement.”
Fery will face second seed Alexander Zverev on Friday, who beat Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. “It’s going to be a great atmosphere. 99% will be rooting for him, but I enjoy that,” Zverev said.
Other semi-finals
In women’s, Marta Kostyuk defeated Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-2 and will face Linda Noskova. The other semifinal is between Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova.
Fery turns 24 on Sunday. “I told the queen it would be great to play in the Wimbledon final on my birthday,” he confessed.
