Argentina comes back against Egypt and advances to the quarterfinals

The Albiceleste overcame a 0-2 lead in the last ten minutes to qualify.

Comeback in Atlanta

The Argentina National Team got its ticket to the quarterfinals of the World Cup after beating Egypt 3-2 in a round of 16 match played in Atlanta, United States. The victory was defined with a spectacular somersault in the final minutes.

Egypt surprised from the beginning. A few minutes later, Yasser Ibrahim gained position in the aerial game over Lisandro Martínez and connected with a header to the far post to open the scoring. Argentina had the opportunity to equalize with a penalty, but Lionel Messi failed due to a great intervention by Mostafa Shobeir.

The Albiceleste kept the pressure on. Shots by Alexis Mac Allister and Julián Álvarez were stopped by Shobeir, who emerged as a partial figure. In the second half, Egypt extended its advantage: Mohamed Salah and Hassan created a counterattack that Mostafa Ziko finished for 0-2.

When the outlook seemed adverse for the world champions, the reaction came. In the 79th minute, Cristian Romero connected with a cross from Messi and scored. Four minutes later, Messi redeemed himself from his missed penalty and scored the equalizer that unleashed euphoria.

The outcome came in stoppage time. At 90+3′, Enzo Fernández appeared in the area to seal the final victory. Argentina thus places itself among the eight best teams in the tournament.

Referee who was separated from the 2026 World Cup found dead

Dutch referee Rob Dieperink, 38, was found dead; had been excluded from the 2026 World Cup.

The Netherlands Football Federation (KNVB) confirmed the death of referee Rob Dieperink, 38, whose body was found on a public road near his home. The whistler had been considered by FIFA to whistle at the 2026 World Cup, but was excluded after an investigation in the United Kingdom.

The investigation that cut short his career

Dieperink appeared on the initial list of referees for the World Cup. However, his name was withdrawn after proceedings were opened against him for a complaint of alleged inappropriate behavior towards a minor before a Conference League match between Crystal Palace and Fiorentina.

British authorities concluded there was insufficient evidence and dismissed the case. Despite this, FIFA maintained its exclusion from the tournament. Dieperink himself declared to the newspaper De Telegraaf:

“I am very saddened to have been wrongly accused. I cooperated fully with the police investigation and was completely transparent.”

After his departure, FIFA appointed Frenchman Willy Delajod as his replacement. Delajod was part of the refereeing team for the match between Argentina and Egypt in the round of 16.

Reactions and pain in the Netherlands

The KNVB issued a statement expressing its shock:

“We are deeply saddened by the death of referee Rob Dieperink. Arbitration loses a highly valued judge, with international experience, but above all an excellent and committed colleague.”

Dutch authorities are investigating the circumstances of the death. So far there is no official information on the cause of death.
