Armando ‘Hormiga’ González fulfilled his first goal in the 2026 World Cup: he added minutes in Mexico’s debut against South Africa. The Chivas forward entered the 68th minute to replace Raúl Jiménez and played 22 minutes. At only 23 years old, he is already a World Cup player.
Reaction of Chicharito Hernández
Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández reacted to his former teammate’s debut with a message on Instagram. He wrote:
“Very proud that a person like him, a great human being like him, with that dedication, that dedication, that talent and that professionalism achieves what he sets out to do.”
The National Team’s all-time top scorer also answered questions from his followers. Regarding whether he would like to play in a World Cup again, he said: “If I want to, I want to play in 25 more World Cups. After almost five or six years without representing my country, it would mean a lot.”
Asked about his favorite World Cup among the three he played in, he chose Russia 2018, although he clarified that he cannot remove the first. Furthermore, for Mexico’s second match against South Korea, he predicted a 2-1 in favor of the Tricolor.
The ‘Hormiga’ earned Javier Aguirre’s call-up thanks to his performances in the last year with Chivas, where he was close to winning the two-time scoring championship. Now, at just 23 years old, he is already part of the World Cup history of Mexican soccer.
