The figure rises: there are now 69 deaths in the Hercules C-130 accident
The Colombian authorities confirmed this Tuesday that the toll of the military plane accident in Puerto Leguízamo, Putumayo, amounted to 69 deaths and 57 injured. It is one of the most serious accidents in recent decades in the country.
A Hercules C-130 aircraft of the Colombian Aerospace Force crashed shortly after takeoff. It transported 126 uniformed personnel to another town in the same Amazonian department.
Families in uncertainty, a debate that resurfaces
While relatives like Manuel López went to the Central Military Hospital in Bogotá looking for their loved ones among the survivors, questions about the causes began to mix with an old complaint: the state of the air fleet.
“May we continue to be strong, because for the people who lost their children there is nothing that can repair,” Luz Huertas, aunt of one of the injured, told the press.
President Gustavo Petro accused previous governments for operating “so old” aircraft and launched direct criticism:
“An army cannot even defend its people with junk gifts. What is of no use to them is given to us and the gift is more expensive than buying new ones,” said Petro on the social network X.
The crashed plane was a donation from the United States within the framework of a defense surplus program, according to official publications from the US State Department in 2020. In 2021, Colombia reported receiving two other similar aircraft.
Former President Iván Duque came to the fore defending the donation received during his mandate. He noted that this model “continues to operate in 50 countries” and asked to investigate factors such as the weight of the plane and the size of the runway.
Local authorities in Puerto Leguízamo have previously warned about the poor conditions of the airport, vital for an area without land access. Meanwhile, the Military Forces and the Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the causes. There are no indications, for now, of an attack by illegal groups.
The last publicly reported maintenance of the aircraft (registration FAC 1016) dates back to 2023 and included structural disassembly and component repair.
