Legislative contradictions in Aguascalientes
The Local Congress of Aguascalientes approved in a single day two opposing social impact measures: declaring bullfighting as intangible cultural heritage and criminalizing the dissemination of narcocorridos in public spaces. The first decision, supported by 26 unanimous votes including Morena, grants constitutional protection to practices such as bullfighting, cockfighting and charrería.
Economic impact vs. ethical debate
According to the legislative ruling, bullfighting shows generate an annual economic benefit of more than 300 million pesos, benefiting sectors such as lodging, restaurants and local commerce. This justification contrasts with the criticism of animal rights organizations, whose protests in front of the Legislative Palace did not prevent the approval.
At the same time, the Penal Code was reformed to punish with 6 months to 1 year in prison and fines exceeding 100,000 pesos the apology for violence in mass events, especially if it involves minors or glorifies criminal groups. The measure comes on the eve of the San Marcos Fair, where exponents of the genre such as Julión Álvarez and Natanael Cano will perform.
