Mexican Renata Zarazúa says goodbye to Wimbledon (and we say goodbye to dreaming of the miracle)
Well yes, dear lovers of sports drama, our national heroine Renata Zarazúa hung up her racket (for this edition) in the temple of tennis: Wimbledon. The Mexican player, who had made us believe in Disney-style happy endings, collided with reality (and against the 13th seed, Ana Anisimova) in the second round. Result: 6-4 and 6-3. That is, enough for the “next time” memes to flood Twitter.
The match: when experience wins over the heart
Zarazúa, our Cinderella with a visor, arrived with the enthusiasm of someone who has just discovered that chocolate cake does not make you fat. But Anisimova, a rival with more boards than an IKEA piece of furniture, reminded her that in elite tennis fairy tales require more than good wishes. The first set was an “almost, almost” (6-4), and the second a “well, at least we tried” (6-3). Of course, the Mexican left some blows worthy of applause (and viral GIFs).
In case anyone doubts it, Anisimova is not exactly an ordinary rival: the American has just won two titles this year and has a setback that scares more than the gas bill in winter. Even so, Zarazúa demonstrated why she has been the most relevant Mexican tennis player for years, with an aggressive game and that attitude of “here I am, even if they break my soul.”
What’s next: what now, Renata?
After this Wimbledon 2025 (yes, we are already in the future, but tennis is still just as unpredictable), Zarazúa will return to the WTA tournaments with more experience under her arm. And be careful, because every time you play, you increase points in the ranking as if they were likes on a TikTok. His next goals include preparing for the US Open, where we hope the synthetic grass will be kinder to him than the aristocratic English grass.
Meanwhile, Mexican fans will continue celebrating their achievements with the same passion with which we chant “Mexico! Mexico!” at any sporting event. Because, let’s be honest, watching a compatriot at a Grand Slam is as exciting as finding a taco stand open at 3 AM.
