Analysis of a Media Crime in Acolman
An event of extreme violence shocked the municipality of Acolman, State of Mexico, when three individuals, two men and a woman, lost their lives in an episode that combines crime, self-defense and the use of digital platforms to justify lethal actions. The alleged perpetrator, identified as Roberto Carlos, known in the digital sphere as “El Custodio”, has claimed responsibility for the events through an audiovisual statement published on his YouTube channel. In his statement, the individual alleges that he acted motivated by an alleged perpetual threat from the victims, whom he classified as property invaders who had threatened to end his life. This argument, based on the legal principle of self-defense, introduces a layer of legal and social complexity to the incident, requiring meticulous investigation to determine the veracity of the claims.
The crime scene, located in the Umán Valley Circuit within the Rinconada del Valle subdivision, was sealed by authorities after receiving multiple neighborhood reports about firearm detonations heard around midnight last Monday. When the emergency services arrived, the death of the three people involved was confirmed. A relevant finding during the expert procedure was the location of a knife among the belongings of one of the victims, a physical element that, although it could be interpreted under different contexts, will be crucial for investigators to reconstruct the dynamics of the confrontation and evaluate the proportionality of the force used.
Investigation and Institutional Response
The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico assumed control of the investigation, deploying its expert agents to carry out the removal of the bodies and the collection of ballistic and forensic evidence. Despite the rapid mobilization of municipal and state police corporations, the alleged perpetrator, Roberto Carlos “N”, managed to evade immediate capture, which generated a search operation for his location and arrest. The individual’s escape raises serious questions about the response capacity and logistics of security protocols in high-impact crime situations.
The phenomenon transcends the traditional criminal sphere as it is intrinsically linked to the digital narrative. The YouTuber’s decision to use his platform to present his version of events constitutes an act of media self-justification without precedent in the region. This case sets a dangerous precedent for the use of social media to construct narratives that attempt to influence public opinion and, potentially, the legal process. The investigation must not only determine the materiality of the crime of homicide, but also analyze the validity of the self-defense invoked, evaluating whether there was an imminent, real and illegitimate aggression, and whether the response was rational and proportionate. The absence of the suspect makes it difficult to contrast his testimony with physical evidence and the testimonies of area residents, who could provide key data on the background of the conflict and the history of interactions between the parties.
