Binational call promotes music as a tool for social transformation
The Government of Mexico, in coordination with the Ministry of Culture, has recorded notable progress in registrations for the contest “Mexico sings for peace and against addictions”, aimed at musical talents between 18 and 34 years old. To date, 10,415 participants (8,017 Mexicans and 2,398 Americans) have responded to the call of President Claudia Sheinbaum, who emphasized the potential of this initiative to redefine artistic narratives away from the glorification of violence.
Geographic distribution and participation categories
A detailed analysis of the records reveals significant patterns: in Mexico, the State of Mexico leads with 26.03% of participants, followed by Mexico City (23.94%) and Jalisco (8.39%). On the American side, California concentrates 28.94% of those registered, with Texas (21.64%) and North Carolina (7.26%) completing the podium. The categories show a balance: 5,543 applicants as singer-songwriters, 2,406 as performers and 2,466 in composition.
Generational diversity stands out with 61% of participants between 24-29 years old, while musical innovation is manifested in 2,450 banda songs, 2,336 northern songs and 1,169 fusions that integrate pop, rock, rap and electronica. “It is not about prohibiting genres, but about encouraging creations that celebrate positive values,” clarified secretary Claudia Curiel de Icaza.
Methodology of selection and cultural projection
The evaluation process will follow a rigorous schedule: after registration closes on May 30, a digital phase (May 31 – July 4) will select 365 semifinalists (10 per Mexican state and 15 per US region). The state (July 5 – August 8) and regional (from August 17) qualifiers will be broadcast by public media, culminating in an in-person exhibition of binational talent.
This project, which exceeded initial expectations, represents an unprecedented effort to reposition music as an agent of social change. According to official data, 78% of the participants have created original material aligned with the objectives of the contest, demonstrating that new generations are looking for creative alternatives to traditional speeches.
