An Austrian court has convicted a 21-year-old man for his role in a plot to attack a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna. The case occurred almost two years ago and caused the cancellation of three presentations of the Eras Tour.
The state court in Wiener Neustadt found Beran A., an Austrian citizen, guilty of crimes related to the concert, according to the Austrian Press Agency. His lawyer reported that he accepted the charges during the first day of the trial.
The frustrated plan and its consequences
According to the accusations, the young man planned to attack people outside the Ernst Happel Stadium using knives or homemade explosives. Tens of thousands of Swift fans, known as Swifties, had traveled to Austria for the shows.
Beran A. admitted to having consumed extremist propaganda on the Internet, but assured that he had no direct intention of causing deaths. The court rejected that argument. Before the judge adjourned the session to deliberate, the defendant stated:
“I just want to say I’m sorry.”
Austrian authorities detected the plan in time and canceled the concerts in August 2024 to protect attendees. The decision generated great disappointment among fans, who gathered in the center of Vienna to exchange friendship bracelets and share their sadness.
The case highlights the security challenges at mass events and the impact of online radicalization among young people. The conviction closes a chapter that kept the entertainment industry in suspense.
