Xabi Alonso, new Chelsea technical director
Spaniard Xabi Alonso signed a four-year contract as Chelsea coach. He will officially take over on July 1, after his departure from Real Madrid last January.
“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football, and it fills me with immense pride to become its coach,” Alonso declared on the London club’s official channels.
He added that they share the same ambition: to build a constant team and fight for titles. He recognized the existing talent and potential of the club.
Alonso, 44, knows the Premier League well. He played for Liverpool between 2004 and 2009, where he won the Champions League and the European Super Cup (2004-05), as well as the FA Cup and the Community Shield (2005-06).
His most recent step as a coach was at Bayer Leverkusen. There he won the Bundesliga, the German Cup and the German Super Cup in the 2023-24 season. He then managed Real Madrid for only eight months, until January 2026.
Chelsea announced his hiring a day after losing 1-0 to Manchester City in the FA Cup final. In that match, the team was led by Calum McFarlane, interim coach following the dismissals of Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior during the 2025-26 season.
Chelsea currently occupies tenth place in the Premier League and is at risk of being left out of European competitions for the 2026-27 season.
Alonso was also world champion with Spain in South Africa 2010 and won two European Championships (2008 and 2012). He made 114 appearances for the Spanish national team and played for Real Sociedad, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
His arrival represents a new stage for Chelsea, which seeks to regain its place in the elite of European football.
