A hard blow for the Spurs and their star
The image spoke for itself. Victor Wembanyama, the great hope of San Antonio, sitting on the court after a fall that shook everyone. It happened in the first half of the second playoff game against Portland.
The game continued, but all eyes were on the Frenchman. Would it be okay? The answer came soon, and it was not the one we wanted to hear.
“He has a concussion. It’s in the protocol. We will take appropriate and appropriate measures,” coach Mitch Johnson confirmed after the game.
Words that weigh like a slab. The Spurs fell 106-103 and tied the series, but that took a backseat. The important thing now is Wemby’s health.
Protocol activated, future paused
When you hear “concussion protocol” in the NBA, you know it’s no small thing. They are strict steps, constant evaluations. There are no shortcuts when it comes to protecting a player.
I experienced firsthand how an injury changes your trajectory. That’s why I know that the only right thing to do here is prudence. Victor’s talent is enormous, but his well-being comes first.
The Spurs medical team now has the ball. Your job will be to guide Wembanyama step by step through that protocol, slowly but surely. The rest of the team will have to push in the meantime.
These situations remind us how fragile everything can be, even for the greatest. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that it’s a temporary thing and we can see Wemby flying around the pitch again soon.
