Resilience made person
Lindsey Vonn has been through it before. And he knows how to win. Four days before the Games, with the cruciate ligament in her left knee completely torn, the American skier’s response is a pure example of competitive mentality.
“My knee is not swollen, and with the help of a knee brace, I’m confident I can compete on Sunday,” Vonn said. “As long as there is a chance, I will try… I will do everything in my power.”
The accident occurred on Friday in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. He ended up in safety nets and required helicopter evacuation. But for her, this is just another bump in the road.
A history of improvement
His career is a manual of comebacks. In 2013, a tear in his right knee. She missed Sochi 2014. She arrived at the 2019 World Cup beaten… and won the bronze.
“I’ve been in this position before. I know how to handle it,” he said. “In 2019 I won a medal with a torn ligament and three fractures. This is not unknown to me.”
His return last season was pure electricity. At 40 years old, after almost six outings, he once again led the downhill circuit with two victories and three more podiums. He skis with a partial titanium implant in his right knee.
Now he looks towards Cortina, where he holds the record for most World Cup victories. Her first race will be the women’s downhill on Sunday. Then would come the Super G and the new team test.
Thursday’s training session will be the first real test. But when Lindsey Vonn speaks, you learn not to underestimate the power of will over any medical diagnosis.
