The victory dance and a penalty in the 98th minute
Vinícius Júnior had the last word. With the Bernabéu expectant, the Brazilian sealed Real Madrid’s pass to the round of 16 of the Champions League this Wednesday. His goal in the 80th minute, and his now characteristic dance next to the flag, closed a tense tie against Benfica (2-1 on the night, 3-1 overall).
The Brazilian star celebrated his goal as he did last week: dancing next to the corner flag.
A week after being the target of alleged insults in Lisbon, Vini responded on the field. The match had started badly for the champion. Rafa Silva put Benfica ahead after 15 minutes, tying the tie. But the Merengue response was immediate.
Aurélien Tchouaméni, with a spectacular right foot from outside the area, equalized two minutes later. Madrid regained control and found their reward at the end with Vinícius’ goal.
A last-gasp penalty saves Italy
While it was being celebrated in Madrid, a real movie was being experienced in Bergamo. Atalanta needed to come back from 3-2 down against Borussia Dortmund. And he did it… in the 98th minute.
With the game already in stoppage time, an error by the rival goalkeeper led to one last attack. A cross into the area ended with a kick to the head by substitute Nikola Krstovic. After reviewing the VAR, a penalty was awarded.
Lazar Samardzic, recently admitted, took responsibility from the eleven meters and did not fail. His goal unleashed madness in Italy.
Samardzic placed his shot on the corner, sparking scenes of jubilation inside the Bergamo stadium.
This epic comeback (4-1 on the night, 4-3 overall) keeps Italy represented in the round of 16. Something that was in serious danger after the early eliminations of Napoli and Inter.
PSG also advanced, although with more suffering. They tied 2-2 with Monaco to go through with an aggregate of 5-4. And although Juventus won 3-0 to force extra time against an opponent not specified in this summary, their dream ended there.
The group stage is over. Now comes the good part: the round of 16. And with stories like today’s, they promise fire.
