Uganda ordered this Wednesday the immediate closure of its border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The decision responds to the increase in suspected cases of a rare variant of Ebola detected in the region.
Variant without treatment
The virus identified corresponds to the Bundibugyo type, for which there are no approved vaccines or treatments. Congolese health authorities report more than 100 confirmed cases and nearly 1,000 suspects. More than 200 deaths associated with the outbreak have been recorded.
Investigations include tracing thousands of potential contacts to slow the spread. The border closure seeks to contain the virus and protect public health in Uganda.
The international community is closely monitoring the evolution of the outbreak in the Central African region.
