Colombian presidential candidate Abelardo de la Espriella, of the Defenders of the Homeland movement, thanked US President Donald Trump for the public support on Wednesday. The support comes less than two weeks before the second round of elections on June 21, where he will face Senator Iván Cepeda.
Republican support
Trump published a message on his Truth Social network offering his “complete and total support” for the conservative candidate, whom he described as an “intelligent, strong and tough” leader. De la Espriella responded in X with gratitude, stating that he received the words with “a beating heart of patriotic gratitude.”
The US president assured that, if he won, De la Espriella would achieve progress in the economy, trade, security and the fight against drug trafficking. He also warned that the election will be decisive for the future of the bilateral relationship.
Reactions in Colombia
The endorsement generated debate. President Gustavo Petro rejected any foreign intervention in the electoral process and asked to vote freely. Tensions between both governments have been constant due to differences on issues such as anti-drug policy, migration and diplomacy.
De la Espriella, with no previous experience in elected office, has aligned his speech with that of Trump. He promises a tougher stance against drug trafficking, with an emphasis on eradicating coca crops and strengthening cooperation with the United States.
