Trump trusts in agreement with Iran despite obstacles
President Donald Trump assured that Iran continues negotiating “until the last moment” to reach an agreement that will end the tension in the Middle East. During a cabinet meeting, the president affirmed that the talks are progressing and expressed confidence in a soon understanding.
Trump seeks an agreement that limits Iranian nuclear capacity and allows the Strait of Hormuz to reopen, a key route for energy trade. In exchange, Iran would receive relief from economic sanctions and hand over part of its reserves of enriched uranium. However, several fundamental points remain unresolved.
The possible pact generates criticism within the Republican Party. Some conservative senators consider the terms too favorable for Tehran and remember Barack Obama’s agreement, canceled by Trump in his first term. Experts warn that Iran could use the resources obtained to strengthen its army and support allied groups.
Another sticking point is Hezbollah’s role in Lebanon. Tehran seeks that any ceasefire includes Israeli operations in Lebanese territory. Israel maintains offensives against positions of the Shiite group and affirms that it will continue for security reasons.
In parallel, Trump seeks to expand the Abraham Accords to normalize relations between Israel and Arab countries. Several nations in the region maintain reservations about the lack of progress towards a Palestinian state. Although the White House says a deal is close, political and military obstacles remain.
