The celebration that ended in tragedy
The joy of a patron saint’s day in the community of Contreras, in Mexquitic de Carmona, turned into a scene of chaos and pain last night. A strong explosion inside the church of San José left a tragic result: one man dead and at least six people injured.
How did it happen? According to the official version, everything happened during the celebrations. Part of the pyrotechnic material that was used in the celebration entered the interior of the temple. The result was instant and devastating.
“During the activities, part of the pyrotechnic material would have entered the interior of the temple, which caused a strong explosion,” authorities confirmed.
The fatal victim was identified as Armando “N”, approximately 40 years old. He was part of the Cerro Prieto musical band that entertained the celebration. His life was extinguished in the middle of what should have been a festive night.
Chaos and response
The thunder caused panic among the attendees. Some of the injured had to be transferred to hospitals in private vehicles, due to the urgency of the moment. The façade of the church also suffered material damage from the force of the explosion.
Civil Protection elements went to the scene and cordoned off the area. Its mission: guarantee security and allow investigations to begin. The scene, according to witnesses, was one of total shock.
What’s coming
The authorities have already launched an investigation to determine precisely the causes and circumstances of the event. Meanwhile, an entire community is left marked by a painful question: how does something that starts as a celebration end like this?
Pyrotechnics, that traditional element of our festivities, demonstrated its darkest and most dangerous side last night. Behind the colors and sounds there are real risks that, when neglected, have irreversible consequences.
Today Contreras does not wake up to continue the party. He wakes up to mourn one of his own and wonder how to continue after this absurd tragedy.
